1. I would like to become a pilot. What do I do?

We recommend that you make a visit to our flying school at Sultan Ismail Petra Airport, Kota Bharu, Malaysia to view our aircraft and facilities, and meet with our instructors.  Our instructors and course administrators will be delighted to guide you and answer all your queries.

Once you have decided to join our school, you can make your application by sending us duly filled forms provided.[Online Application Form] .  You will also need to send a letter for approval to the Department of Civil Aviation (DCA).[Download sample letter of approval]

2. Is the flying school recognised by the local aviation authority?

Yes, Asia Pacific Flight Training is authorized to conduct flying courses by the Department of Civil Aviation, Malaysia (DCA).  We are also internationally recognised and are part of the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO).


3. What types of training aircrafts are used in your flying school? 

Asia Pacific Flight Training operates single engine aircraft which consists of Diamond DA40,Piper Warrior II and Eagle 150B.  We also have twin engine aircraft which consists of Diamond DA42 and Piper Seneca PA34. We also have two simulator which are ALSIM AL200-DA42 and ALSIM AL200MCC.


4. What qualifications do I need to join the course?

To apply for the CPL/IR licence, the minimum requirements by the Department of Civil Aviation, Malaysia (DCA) are:
•    SPM with 5 credits inclusive of English, Mathematics and one Science subject.  (For Malaysian students)
•    GCE 'O' level or equivalent with passes in similar subjects.  (For Foreign Students)
•    Minimum 18 years old.


APFT the shortlisting criterias are:
•    SPM with 5 credits inclusive of English, Mathematics and Physics with minimum of 3 B’s.
•    GCE ‘O’ levels or equivalent with 3 B’s in English, Mathematics and Physics.
•    DCA Approved
•    Male
•    Minimum height 5’ 2’’ and Maximum weight of 85kg.

5.    What  is the duration of the CPL/IR course?

CPL/IR with Frozen ATPL for novice - 18-20 months

6.    What courses do APFT offer?


APFT offers the PPL, CPL/IR, Frozen ATPL and Diploma in Aviation(Pilot Training).

We also conduct the Aviation English Test required by the DCA for all pilots.

APFT also offers the Assistant Flight Instructor (AFI) course once you have the CPL/IR licence. 

7. For a CPL/IR licence, how many hours of flying do I need?


For the CPL/IR licence, a cadet pilot will require a minimum of 200 hours of flying. The flight training includes General Handling, Instrument Flying, Navigation and Night Flying, as per the UKCAA CAP 54 requirements.


8. Apart from the ground school and flying licence, what other qualifications will I get after completing the course?

As APFT is an IPTS, students will be awarded the additional Diploma in Aviation (Pilot Training).  The Aviation English Test is also included in the course.


9. Is there a maximum age limit for CPL/IR course?

There is no age limit for taking this course. However, the licence is valid up to the age of 65.


10. What if I need glasses?

Applicant must seek advised from the Designated Medical Examiners to ensure they are eligible to enroll in flying courses.

11. What about colour blindness?

Those with colour blindness can still obtain a Private Pilot Licence/Commercial Pilot Licence. However, colour blindness may be an obstacle for entry into major airlines. There are still many other career opportunities available. Contact the airlines directly to be certain of their requirements.


12. How fit must I be to qualify for a Malaysian Licence?

Only medical examiners who are designated and authorised by the Department of Civil Aviation, Malaysia can conduct the aircrew medical. The following are the DCA authorised designated medical examiners as of to date:

13. When are the intakes held and how do I confirm a place at APFT?


Once you are shortlisted, you will be required to pay RM15,000 to book a place for the next available intake.  There are 8 intakes in a year.  For more information you can contact the registrar at +603-20923177 or +6019-2819310.

14. As a private student, will there be any assistance for funding if I join your school?


Asia Pacific Flight Training does not provide scholarships but we can make arrangements with commercial banks for funding.  Students can apply to government agencies and APFT can assist in recommending that the training be done at APFT.  

15. Can I or my parents withdraw from the Employees Provident Fund (EPF) for this course?


Starting from June 10, 2005, Employees Provident Fund (EPF) contributors may now use their savings in their EPF Account II to fund and finance their own or their children's pursuit of the Commercial Pilot License with Instrument Rating (CPL/IR) Course. Please refer to the EPF (www.kwsp.gov.my) website for more information.

16. Am I guaranteed a job upon completion of the CPL/IR with Frozen ATPL course from the flying school?


Asia Pacific Flight Training does not guarantee you a job. However, as we have an agreement with airlines to provide them with pilots, we will be able to assist you in getting an interview with them. However, obtaining a position will depend on your performance.

17. With a CPL/IR license, will I be able to get a job with Malaysia Airlines / Air Asia?


Getting a job with Malaysia Airlines or Air Asia depends on the vacancies available and whether you meet their requirements. You can find out more at Malaysia Airlines or Air Asia websites.
